Preparing to Manage Human Resources

week 3 Assignment :

PROMPT

0) In the title box above, name the work unit you are focusing on.

1) In the box below, briefly describe the scope of the unit you are focusing on. [For example, if I was using my own situation, I would say: “The Department of Work and Organizations in the Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota. This includes approximately 25 full-time employees, 10 part-time employees, and 20 student workers.”]

Grading: The grading of this and the following components will generally follow this rubric:

  • 0 points: little to no description (or justification in some questions)
  • 1 point: some elements are missing or lack consistency with other elements
  • 2 points: adequate description or justification
  • 3 points: a high-quality, clear description, strong fit with other elements, or strong and logical justification

I was a chief of R&D Department of Industry Engineering Workshop. I worked with 5 full-time staffs. Each of them has their own project and I analyzed the proposal & the output and organized the date of their deadline projects

PROMPT

2) In a few sentences, describe the mission or key responsibilities of this unit. [Continuing with my example, I might say “The Department of Work and Organizations creates cutting-edge research and offers engaging educational programming focused on the workplace, managing and leading people and organizations, and the behavior of individuals and groups. The department offers programs at the undergraduate, master's, and doctoral levels, including the internationally recognized Master of Arts in Human Resources and Industrial Relations.”]

To receive all 3 points, the mission and unit responsibilities need to be clearly described in detail.

The missions of my department are giving workshops to other collegers who need a workshop, such as SPSS Workshop, Advanced skilled of Microsoft Word Workshop, etc.

PROMPT

3) In a few sentences, identify one important set of employees in this unit. Try to think of a job category that directly serves the central mission of the unit and help determine the extent to which the unit thrives. [Continuing with my own example: “One important set of employees in my unit is full-time tenured and tenure-track faculty. These are the individuals responsible for conducting research, for teaching classes, and setting curricular standards, which are some of the key tasks that directly deliver unit’s mission.”]

To receive all 3 points, the focal type of employee needs to be identified and described, including why they are identified as a key group and what their responsibilities are to contribute to the success of the unit.

One important set of staffs in my unit is full-time tenured. Those are the individuals responsible for preparing the event (The workshop) running smoothly, setting the currricular standards and also preparing the teacher.

PROMPT

Now we get to the real value of the assignment: applying what you’ve learned about HR priorities, HR strategies, managerial styles, internal/external influences, and why workers work to a real business unit.

4) In a couple of sentences, use the material in Modules 2 and 3 on why workers work to describe what you see as the main motivators for this set of important employees. [In my own example, I would talk about the importance of fulfillment, especially mastering challenges and creating new knowledge, of freedom, especially in terms of creativity, and of strong occupational norms among faculty.]

To receive all 3 points, the main motivators need to be clearly described in detail and fit the type of occupation analyzed.

The main importance in working with me was the form of the workshop was totally yours, it meant I did not limit just creativity, just do your best as long as it was in the corridor. If you want to discuss or talk to me or the team, go ahead, we will listen to you and give you suggestions if you want.

PROMPT

5) In a few sentences, explain what you think should be the key HR priorities for managing this important set of employees. Some possibilities might include managing labor costs or turnover, hiring new talent, developing employees to equip them with new skills, motivating them, retaining them, and/or rewarding them. Make sure that your analyses are consistent with your analyses in the previous questions. [Continuing with my own example, I would talk about two challenges for faculty in my unit: determining hiring needs for new faculty based on the future strategic directions of my unit, continuing to provide autonomy, and rewarding existing faculty in a challenging budgetary environment in order to retain the exceptional talent we have.]

To receive all 3 points, the key HR priorities need to be clearly described in detail and fit the type of occupation analyzed and the unit's mission.

My HR priorities were 2. (1) Hard to encourage the collegers to join the workshop even it was useful for themselves and (2) it was hard to encourage the team to prepare the workshop very well.

PROMPT

6) In a couple of sentences, draw on the discussion of different types of HR strategies in the first module to specify the type of HR strategy that would be most effective for managing these employees. Again, make sure that your analyses are consistent with your analyses in the previous questions. [In my own example, I would justify the use of high-road strategies with a lot of discretion and autonomy.]

To receive all 3 points, the appropriate HR strategy needs to be clearly described and fit the type of occupation analyzed, the workers’ motivations, and the unit's mission.

I would like to have the High-road Strategies with a lot of discretion.

PROMPT

7) In a couple of sentences, draw on the video lecture “Alternative Managerial Styles” in the first module to specify the managerial styles that would be best suited for managing these employees. Again, make sure that your analyses are consistent with your analyses in the previous questions. [In my own example, I would explain why democratic and coaching managerial styles are most appropriate.]

To receive all 3 points, at least two managerial styles need to be identified and clearly linked to serving the workers’ and unit’s needs.

I am a democratic person, I am glad to listen and discuss. I am a participative style. I need a commitment, trust, and respect in the team, and also I trust by discussing, we can develop and motivate each other

PROMPT

8) In a paragraph, explain the internal and external influences that shape the strategies that you are identifying in questions 6 and 7. If needed, refer back to lesson 3 in Module 1. [In my own example, three factors stand out: labor market competition for outstanding faculty, strong occupational norms among faculty, and an organizational strategy that emphasizes the creation and delivery of new knowledge through academic freedom. And also my own values that emphasize the importance of employee voice.]

To receive all 3 points, the internal and external influences that shaped the recommendations in questions 6 and 7 need to be clearly identified and logically defended regarding their impact on the recommendations.

There are some factors that influence my strategies, first, the motivation of the team, second, the skill of the team, third, the market
